Besides saké and shochu Japanese distillers are becoming increasingly famous for their whiskies.
One company that brought Scottish distilling traditions to Asia and produces great single malts and blends today is the Nikka Distillery.
The Nikka Pure Malt Black is one of their malts that were created in two different distilleries. It has a rich and complex bouquet of chocolate, mild smoke, vanilla, caramel and some apricot and pear. Nutty aromas are to be found further in the background. On the palate the Japanese whisky is smooth and sweet, offering flavours of toffee, vanilla, dried fruits, smoky peat, nuts and a little peppery oak. After a short while, a pleasant dryness sneaks up. The finish is of medium length and offers a well-balanced interplay between sweet traces and slightly spicy ginger notes.
The Nikka Pure Malt Black is a combination of whiskies from Nikka’s Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries. The former mainly produces single malts of a lighter and fruitier character, while the latter is responsible for the stronger and smokier parts.
Together those two build a great combination and due to the experience of Nikka’s employees the character shows a fantastic balance.
Even though whisky is not a typically Japanese spirit, the Nikka Distillery is doing a very good job in creating elegant malts, which are known the world over. They acquired an excellent reputation and are even enjoyed by fans of Scottish malts.
But one has to say that Nikka’s whiskies even embody a certain part of Scotch. Not in the way that they are blended with Scotch whisky but that their production follows old traditions and methods from the land of whisky making.
Masataka Taketsuru, who founded the Nikka Distillery, went to Scotland for two years. There he found the love of his life and gained a deep insight into the manufacturing of whisky.
