| Distillery Information | Kielseng-Flensburg -the cradle of rum tradition Jørgen Carstensen was born in 1678 on the estate Kielseng near Flensburg. In 1694 Jørgen reached St. Thomas and began working for the Danish Vestindisk Kompagni as a "botteler". During the administration of his uncle, the governor of St. Thomas, the first barrels of an early form of rum, Kildywel, were already exported to Europe. Through the purchase of the Mosquito Bay plantation and other fortunate decisions, Jørgen's son Johan Lorentz consolidated the family's influence in the sugar and rum business. His service to the kingdom contributed to Johan Lorentz being ennobled in 1745 and allowed to bear the name Castenschiold. |
