Girolamo Luxardo built the Luxardo brand in the port town of Zara on the Dalmatian Coast which is now in the country Croatia but at the time was part of the republic of Venice. 

Girolamo Luxardos wife Maria Canevari spent her time at home making and perfecting liqueur. 

Her classic liqueurs caught the attention of connoisseurs which motivated the family to found their own distillery. Essential oils are extracted by steam from the anise which makes the oils soluble in alcohol.   

Due to the Second World War the family Luxardo was forced to flee to Italy which temporarily compromised the production. 

Fortunately Giorgio Luxardo however decided to build a new distillery in the municipality of Torreglia, in Northern Italy in 1946, where until today Luxardo liqueurs are still produced after the secret family recipe ensuring quality and excellence. 

The Luxardo distillery very quickly become one of the most important distilleries in Italy and is one of the oldest family owned business that produces liqueurs in Europe.

Currently the operation is already in its sixth generation and is still led exclusively by members of the family who have extended the range of liqueurs, added a range of liqueur concentrates for the baking industry and ice-cream manufacturers.  

The Luxardo Sambuca raspberry liqueur is ideal for the pure enjoyment, on ice or as in Germany, pure in a shot glass with the addition of three coffee beans which are lit to flame so that the intense flavor of anise unfolds.
