The Jura Distillery is a company that is not just selling whisky. It is sharing parts of the Isle of Jura and its history with the whole world

This island is part of the Inner Hebrides south-west of Scotland and its residents are known under their Gaelic name Diurachs. Even though Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, the founder of the Jura Distillery, started their business in 1963, the history of whisky production on the Isle of Jura is not as young as it may seem. Its origin can be traced back to the beginning of the 17th century.

Unfortunately, the production of liquids did not bring enough liquidity to the bank accounts so that the business went bankrupt in the early 20th century. The old facilities were decaying over the years until Fletcher and Riley-Smith decided to rebuild them. In 1985 the Jura Distillery was bought by Invergordon Destillers, which was taken over by Whyte & Mackay later on. Today it is part of Emperador International Ltd.
The Jura Master Distiller is bringing flavours to the world of Jura whiskies
The water for the whisky production comes from the clear spring Bhaille Mharghaidh. The distillery uses mostly unpeated or very little peated malt. There are one mash tun and six wash backs in operation. Two wash stills with 25000 l capacity each and two spirit stills, each with 22000 l, produce a relatively smooth new make. For the maturing process, the Jura Distillery employs various types of casks. By using mainly bourbon, Amoroso Oloroso sherry, Bordeaux, Pinot Noir and Ruby port casks, the Master Distiller is able to create a wide range of aromas and to bring flavours to the world of whiskies that have not been tasted before.© photobucket.com | Isle of Jura Single Malt Island Whisky distillery
Each year the Jura Distillery and its fans are celebrating the golden spirit at the Jura Tastival. Whisky enthusiast are invited to have a special whisky tasting while cruising on a boot around the Isle of Jura, to talk shop with the experts about different aromas and flavours, to have an introduction into the world of Jura and to make a real blind tasting in the darkness of a warehouse.
