The Famous Grouse Port Wood Finish is a blended Scotch with a sweet and fruity port wine character
Especially in Scotland The Famous Grouse brand is well-known among whisky friends. Since the 1980s, the company’s staple is the best-selling blended whisky in Scotland. The Famous Grouse Port Wood Finish is another delicious variation, which imparts the traditional character combined with fruity impressions.
On the nose it reveals sweet and soft aromas of red fruits, raisins, plums, a bit honey, nuts and port wine. On the palate the sweetness is at least as strong as on the bouquet while fruity flavours of redcurrants and raisins dominate. Furthermore, mellow nuances of vanilla, malt, caramel and even a hint of smoke make this dram more complex. The finish is medium long and preserves what the whisky offered before. The whisky fades out with dark red fruits and a gentle sweetness.
The Famous Grouse Port Wood Finish is a blended Scotch that consists of various whiskies. Generally spoken grain whisky and malt whisky are the two components but those two spilt up into many spirits from diverse distilleries. It is said that the Glenturret Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, is contributing one of the key malts. The distinction to other blends is the special maturation of the product. After marrying the different whiskies, the dram is ageing in well-selected port wine casks. Because those barrels were used to mature port wine, their wood is seasoned with very distinctive flavours. Thus, the Famous Grouse Port Wood Finish developed such a fruity and sweet character.
The Famous Grouse’s story began when the wine merchant Matthew Gloag created his first blended whisky in 1896. Actually, it was just the start of The Grouse brand. During the following nine years his product became so popular that Gloag decided to rename it to The Famous Grouse. Today, more than a century later, this blended Scotch is loved as always and more famous than ever.
