Mackmyra Svensk Ek Swedish Single Malt 0,7 l
The Mackmyra Svensk Ek is a Single Malt Whisky from Sweden, where it matured in American and Swedish oak
Why are there no whisky distilleries in Sweden? That was the question eight Swedish friends was asking themselves in 1998 and it was the beginning of the Swedish whisky history. The friends opened a distillery not far from the city Gävle in the West close by the Baltic Sea. There they produce among others the Mackmyra Svensk Ek.
On the nose this single malt has a sweet and fruity character. It shows aromas of apple, citrus, pear, a bit oak and honey. On the palate it is becoming a little spicier with notes of sandalwood, dried ginger, black pepper and roasted oak. Nevertheless, the sweet nuances of caramel and honey as well as some fruity influences are not missing. The finish shows a fantastic balance between a chilli spiciness, some dark chocolate and smooth hints of vanilla.
The Mackmyra Svensk Ek is a Single Malt Whisky that matured in two kinds of casks. On one hand it was filled in casks made of American oak and on the other hand in casks made of Swedish oak. The usage of the Swedish oak in whisky production is absolutely unique and an interesting novelty. The wood stems from the island of Visingsö, where it was grown for building ships for the Swedish Royal Navy. Now it gives very special flavours to the Swedish single malts and a name to this premium whisky because Svensk Ek means “Swedish Oak”.
The Mackmyra Distillery produced the first Swedish Single Malt Whisky in 1998. Eight friends went on a skiing trip and discovered their collective love for fine whisky. Just one year later the first spirit was distilled. Since then the company grew fast and constantly. More and more warehouses were opened, the variety offered spirits grow and the attention paid by whisky enthusiasts from around the world increased. In 2012 the company was appointed the European Spirits Producer of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).
