As the name suggests the sought-after Aberlour 15 year double cask single malt is produced in the demanding double cask maturation process. This means that the whisky is first matured in Bourbon barrels and is then stored in Sherry casks. The whisky receives its uniqueness by the way of ripening in a young Sherry barrel. Here the golden amber colored Aberlour 15 finds its soothing and mellow end from a one-year storage and meets the high quality standards. Prior to the maturation process the spirit undergoes a vital double distillation process in copper pot stills. This complex manufacturing process provides more content and depth of the Scots and determines its intensity.
The Aberlour distillery was founded in 1879 by James Fleming a well-known grain dealer. The distillery is located in Aberlour, a village next to the small Bach Lour, around 300 meters from the river Spey. This small village owes its popularity to the Aberlour distillery. Aberlour means "Mouth of the babbling brook", which is a further indication of the interconnectedness of the distillery with the village.
Aberlour was awarded the "Distiller of the Year" award in 2003.
