The Laphroaig PX Cask comes from the Isle of Islay where it matured in ex-bourbon barrels, Quarter Casks and Pedro Ximenez casks
This special Islay whisky is an elegant creation from the Laphroaig Distillery that offers on one hand the well-known Islay smoke and on the other hand a fine character from Pedro Ximenez casks.
The great complexity of the Laphroaig PX Cask was developed by maturing the spirit in three kinds of barrels. This has led to an aroma that is full of smoke.
The smoky peat has a phenolic and clinical touch. Behind it, the notes of sweet liquorice, vanilla, a soft fruitiness and some raisins stay in the background. On the palate comes first, as expected, a heavy smoke flavour and then a lot of sherry, oak and spices.
The sherry is not too sweet and overall the dram makes a quite dry impression. To the end the three main characteristics smoke, sherry and oak stay preserved and build the dry finish.
The character of the Laphroaig PX Cask was crafted in various steps. One very important part was the kiln-drying of the malted barley.
As the Laphroaig Distillery uses peat to heat the kiln, it is determining the smokiness of the later whisky. Another essential step comes after the distillation process when the spirit is filled in casks and left alone for many years. In this case three different types of barrels were used for the maturation.
First of all the new make was filled in ex-bourbon casks. Then it made its way into Quarter Cask, which are smaller but therefore offer more contact between wood and liquid.
Finally, the whisky is finishing in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Those barrels have been seasoned with richly flavoured sherry and thus bring deep and sweet aromas to the single malt.
The name Laphroaig PX Cask is referring to the special maturation as the PX stands for Pedro Ximenez.
As the Laphroaig PX Cask is such a lovely dram it already had the chance to win several medals:
- SF World Spirits Competition 2011 – Double Gold
- International Wine & Spirit Competition 2010 – Gold Medal Best in Class
- SF World Spirits Competition 2010 – Silver
