The Glenmorangie Duthac was created in honour of the most successful king of Scotland, James IV.
The Glenmorangie Duthac is an expression of Glenmorangie’s legends collection. The distillery is to be found in a town called Tain in the Scottish Highlands.
There it uses the fresh and clear water that comes from the Tarlogie Hills to produce, among others, this great Glenmorangie Duthac.
This Highland whisky has a beautiful bronze-coloured sheen and a smell that is made up of candied apples, pears, toffee, spices and toasted oak. On the palate the flavours of Brazil nuts, leather, milk chocolate, toffee and aniseed are to be detected. Furthermore, nuances of spicy ginger and a little clove create new facets of savouriness. The finish is still voluminous with hints of vanilla, apricot and marzipan.
Glenmorangie’s legends collection consists of the Glenmorangie Dornoch and the Glenmorangie Duthac. The latter was created in honour of King James IV., who made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Duthac in Tain every year.
King James IV. was governing Scotland between 1488 until his death in 1513 and was later denominated as the most successful monarchs that Scotland ever had.
The Glenmorangie Duthac is double matured in two interesting kinds of casks. First it spent its time in virgin oak casks, which have not been filled before.
Those casks are toasted before use, so that the wood opens up for the spirit and the wood sugar can get caramelized. For the second phase of maturation, the whisky is filled in ex-Pedro Ximenez casks.
Those casks contained sherry before and therefore their wood is full of flavours and colours that affect the character of the single malt. The entity of the two maturation steps create a unique Scotch whisky and make this Glenmorangie Duthac a very special dram.
The Glenmorangie Distillery is operating since 1843, when it was purchased by William Matheson. Until then it was used as a brewery. Today the distillery is quite famous for its stills, which have an extraordinary high design. This height is causing the produced spirit to be very smooth and clear.
