In 1919 the 24-year-old Norwegian born Jens Reidar Larsen immigrated to France. Actually he had planned a trip to America but on his stopover in France he decided to stay there and did not travel any further. Quickly he deepened his knowledge in the field of the production of Cognac and its ingredients. A few years later he bought Joseph Gautier Cognac Company just north of Bordeaux, France and is well known for fine eaux-de-vie (the spirits official full name). Larson founded his own company called "Le Cognac of the Vikings" SA. Larsen eventually married a girl from Cognac and went on to produce two children who also joined the family business. Thanks to Larsenís good business sense, today the Larsen distillery is one of the more recent of its kind but at the same time it represents an integral part of the market. In the 1960ís Larsenís homeland Norway and Scandinavia quickly embraced his sophisticated Cognac making it a top seller in the area.
Larsen Cognac is known for particularly fruity, fresh grape aromas that arise during a special distillation process. To this end wines from the regions of Cognac, Fins Bois (Fins Bois eaux-de-vies are characterized by their floral, fruity softness which adds good complexity and body to blends, but without the structure to age well as an exclusive cru blend) and Grande Champagne (Grande Champagne is a district, called a cru, known for its Cognac. It produces the finest Cognacs in a zone of 34703 hectares, of which 17% is dedicated to production of Cognac) are used. These pass through the distillation process particularly quickly so that the powerful grape flavors are preserved. Following the distillation process the brandies are stored for at least six years in Limousine oak barrels which bring the Cognac unique characteristics and wonderful flavors.
Today the Larsen Cognac is made by the third generation but the traditional recipes and methods are still used. Thus Larsen Cognacs has guarantee the finest quality Cognacs for decades. A special feature of the company are the bottles, some of which have extraordinarily sophisticated forms and are still decorated with a Viking ship which is to preserve the basic features, mission and values of the company. The easy-on-the-eye bottle is guaranteed to be an admired collectorís item and will proudly stand tall in any Cognac collection.
