The Amrut single malt is a whisky from Bangalore in India and constitutes a serious alternative to Scottish malts

Details: Amrut Indian Single Malt

  • Indischer Whisky
  • Single Malt
  • Whisky aus Bangalore

When talking about India, just very few people might think about whisky in the first place. That could change with the Amrut single malt, which comes from Bangalore, the capital of the federal state Karnataka.

This non-chill filtered whisky has a wonderful, gold yellow hue that does without any colourant.

Its smell is a little fruity explosion, which is very well balanced with grain and oak notes. Furthermore, the nose might detect some toffee, nutty aromas, liquorice and citrus.

On the palate the Amrut might remind of a bourbon with a stronger barley and oak aroma. The alcohol content of 46 % becomes noticeable and flavours of apricot, liquorice and allspice shine through.

The finish is quite long and a bit drier with nuances of apricot, toffee, malt and a dominating part of oak.

The Amrut Distillery is a good example that a delectable single malt does not necessarily need to be produced in Scotland. The company was established by Shri J.N. Radhakrishnain 1948, one year after the British parliament decided to decolonize India.

It was mainly producing liquor, which it sold to the military. The small business grew fast and evolved into an international player.

Besides a core range of five single malts and ten special edition whiskies, the company is also producing brandy, rum, vodka and gin.

According to the Amrut Distillery the barley, which is used for this single malt, comes from the northern part of India. There it grew at the foot of the Himalayas and was irrigated by the fresh water that comes from the mountains.

The grain is a very important basis for a good whisky and each step of the manufacturing process is adding more value to the product so that in the end a sublime whisky can be savoured.

The great quality of the Amrut single malt was attested with the following awards:

  • Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2014 - Gold at the Liquid Gold Award
  • Malt Maniacs Awards 2008 - Bronze
  • Malt Maniacs Awards 2009 - Bronze
