This Speyside whisky is an award-winning product from the Glenlivet Distillery, which is located south of the small town Ballindalloch and close to the river Livet.

The Glenlivet Master Distiller’s Reserve is a single malt Scotch that was launched for the travel retail. With its bright colour it looks shiny and golden.

The smell is very fruity, especially because of the flavoursome notes of ripe pears. It is soft, sweet and voluminous, with a slight spiciness that is almost entirely hidden behind a lush fruit basket.

On the palate the fruity character goes on, even though is seems a bit alleviated. The taste is constructed of mango, orange marmalade, citrus, cinnamon and cedar. Oak appears as well and a slight bitterness is to be detected.

Towards the end the flavour is becoming more nutty and spicy, with a fabulous aroma of marzipan.

The Glenlivet Master Distiller’s Reserve is based on the clear water from the Josie’s Well and the high quality malt from Crisp Maltings in Portgordon.

For the important maturing process, the Master Distiller decided to fill the freshly distilled spirit into three different types of casks. Traditional oak, American oak and first fill ex-sherry casks are the key for a complex and well-balanced character.

Founded in 1824, the Glenlivet Distillery was not the first whisky producer in the Speyside region but it was the first licensed company. Illicit distilling was common back then until the Excise Act was passed in 1823.

Georg Smith was the first person, who applied for a license and became therefore quite unpopular among the distillers. They were hoping that the Exercise Act would be repealed, if nobody is licensing its production.

With the Glenlivet Distillery making the first step towards legality, there was no way back to the illicit production.

The Glenlivet Master Distiller’s Reserve is a relatively new dram in Glenlivet’s product range. Nevertheless it is awarded several times already.
