When talking about whiskies from the Isle of Islay, one may remember automatically very smoky single malts.

Due to the natural conditions on that island and the special use of peat during the kiln drying of the malted barley, a certain character is created. Moreover, each Islay whisky has its own stamping, which results from the ingredients used and techniques applied.

For the Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 7.2 just the best raw materials were good enough and the maturation appears to be far from normal. Thus, the Bruichladdich Distillery created a single malt Scotch of a golden colour and an aroma consisting of fruity notes like pear, red berry, peach and ripe apple as well as floral hints of heather, orange blossom and lilies.

Throughout the flavoursome smell a rich smokiness is ensnaring the nose. On the palate the fantastic balance of peat and fruit goes on.

On one hand the sweet flavours of toffee, honey, crème brûlée and brown sugar mix with strawberries, brambles and cherries. On the other hand this dram reveals a decent amount of peat, which is not just extinguishing the other flavours but constitutes a perfect counterpart to the sweet and fruity parts. Towards the finish notes of vanilla, red fruits and lemon fade out slowly while the smokiness lasts even a little longer.

The Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 7.2 is part of a super heavily peated series. Those whiskies range from 167 up to 258 ppm and the Octomore Edition 7.2 is with 208 ppm the second strongest.

Besides its heavy smokiness the whisky matured in well-selected casks. One part was filled in ex-bourbon casks, which are made of American white oak. The other part aged in barrels that held French Syrah before.

Those casks were used to produce red wine in the northern Rhone valley. After a maturation of five years, the drams were married. The ageing period appears rather short but contributes to the complexity of the whole whisky.
