The Black Velvet Reserve 8 Year Old is a blended whisky from Canada that has a soft, smooth and velvety character

The Black Velvet Reserve 8 Year Old is a blended whisky from the Canadian town Lethbridge in Alberta. Its smell is full of sweet toffee and rich notes of vanilla fill up the tumbler. The scent of rye is pushing its way through the toffee and brings a smooth flavour of bourbon along. The body is medium strong and starts soft and quietly. Then rye and oak become stronger, without bringing too much bitterness. Some spice and roasted nuts show up as well. The finish is soft and medium short. The rye overlies the oak before both fade out quietly.

The original home of Black Velvet is Valleyfield in Quebec, Canada, where Schenley Industries started to produce this blended whisky in 1945. The first years it was called Black Label but when Master Distiller Jack Napier released his first batch, it was renamed as Black Velvet. Napier described the taste as smooth and very velvety so that the special flavour was influencing the naming.

The Black Velvet Reserve matured eight years in handmade oak barrels. Special about this whisky is the way of blending. In contrast to other distilleries, Black Velvet applies the “Blended at Birth” method. Typically, the spirits mature in oak casks before they are blended together. In this case the new make comes from the still, is blended with other spirits and then is filled in oak barrels.

Very characteristic of Canadian whiskies is their smoother, softer and lighter appearance compared to for example the Scotch whiskies. Especially the ingredients make the difference. In Canada the whisky is normally produced of maize, rye and a smaller amount of malted barley. The blended whisky usually is made of a smooth grain whisky, which builds the base, and a stronger more aromatic whisky, which is mainly responsible for the distinctive flavours.
