Why the unusual name? Well, either Mr. Gloag was a funny bird or his close ties to Scotland had lead him to this choice of name.

After a short time this quality blended Whisky gained a certain degree of popularity in Scotland. Matthew Gloag added the name of "Famous" to the title which we believe sounded successful and appealing in 1905. "The Famous Grouse" was thus born and received full attention from large distilleries.

In 1970 Highland distillers Ltd. eventually took over the small distillery and henceforth took care of the production of this unique Famous Grouse smoky black Whisky. It’s national and international reputation, the financial possibilities and of course the excellent know-how of Highland provided for a steady, economic ascent of the distillery.  The best grain possible, pure Scottish water and seasoned bourbon and sherry casks all contribute to the creating of this sought-after Whisky.  More than 43 million bottles are sold annually across 94 countries. Matthew Gloag signature proudly adorns each bottle. The distillery forests most of its wood for casks, from planting saplings, milling and building of the casks.
