The Bell’s Blended Scotch is combining the best characters from Islay and Speyside whiskies

The blended Scotch from the Bell’s company has been the best-selling blend in the United Kingdom, which probably resulted from a pleasant character combined with an affordable price.

It convinces with a smooth and gentle bouquet of sweet malt, honey, biscuit, freshly cut herbs and floral nuances. On the palate the dram imparts notes of cereals, nuts, spicy oak, a slight sweetness and traces of heather while the body is mainly smooth. The finish has even a hint of smoke but the biggest part exists of floral notes and some sweet caramel.

This blended Scotch is the original Bell’s whisky and one of the classic drams of Scotland. On one hand it is such a classic product because its creator Arthur Bell launched his first blended whisky more than 150 years ago. He was actually a tea and whisky merchant and thus he knew what his customers were looking for.

On the other hand it is a classic product because the Bell’s company is obtaining very fine malts from well-known Scottish distilleries. Spirits from Caol Ila, Glenkinchie, Inchgower and Duffown are brought to the own distillery Blair Athol, where the magic happens. The mixture of smoky Islay whisky with fresher and sweeter characters from Speyside makes the Bell’s more complex and interesting. It contains about 60 % grain whisky and 40 % malt whisky.

The Blair Athol Distillery can be seen as the heart of the Bell’s brand. It is located in the village Pitlochry and was founded in 1798. Today it is still working and can be visited by fans of the famous blended Scotch whisky. The distillery was purchased in the 1930, when the whisky boom started after the prohibition in the United States ended.

That was the time, when Arthur Bell & Sons experienced an enormous growth and expanded their production immensely. In 1978 Bell’s blended Scotch became the number one whisky in the United Kingdom.
