Who has been travelling on the north-eastern coast of Scotland somewhere between Wick and Keiss Castle might have passed by the old Noss Head Lighthouse.

Not far from Port Wick, where the Old Pulteney Distillery is located, the old lighthouse is guiding the way since 1849. Furthermore, it gave its name to the Old Pulteney Noss Head single malt.

This Scotch whisky has a light golden, natural colour and a bouquet of floral notes, maritime influences, fruity citrus, coconut and caramel. Additionally, a slight spiciness wafts through.

On the palate this spicy impression gains more power and fills the mouth with a warm and comforting feeling. As a balancing component sweet hints of coconut and fresh flavours of citrus and orange arise.

This well-balanced character stays on through the whole finish, which is lasting surprisingly long.

The Old Pulteney Noss Head is part of a lighthouse series that was launched for the travel retail in 2013. This series consist of two further single malts, which also represent Scottish lighthouses. Each whisky has its own character because of a different maturation.

The Old Pulteney Noss Head aged in American ex bourbon casks, the Old Pulteney Duncansby Head in American ex bourbon and Spanish ex sherry casks and the Old Pulteney Pentland Skerries in Spanish ex sherry casks.

In 1826 the Old Pulteney Distillery was built in Wick by James Henderson. The town’s port has always been of great importance for the merchants and manufacturers of the region as it was a convenient way of shipping goods.

For James Henderson the port was on one hand the connection to customers around the world but on the other hand it assured a constant supply of barley.

The successful distillery was run by the Henderson family almost a whole century before it was sold to James Watson.

Unfortunately just two years after the acquisition, the prohibition was adopted in Wick and gave Watson many sleepless nights.

But luckily the distillery had a comeback during the second half of the 20th century and is run by the Inver House Distillers today.
