Not far from the town Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay stands the Laphroaig Distillery. It is producing wonderful peated Single Malt Whiskies since 1815. The Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr is another great creation that reflects the typical Laphroaig character but still has its own traits.

On the nose everything starts quite smooth. A complex composition of smoke, lavender, figs, a little sweetness and spices hover around before the smoky peat prevails after a while. The body gives a great soft sensation and appears very voluminous. Although the dram seems mild and smooth it reveals an impressive power. The taste consists of peppery notes, spices, espresso, orange peels, tannins and liquorice. A typical saltiness is also present. To the end the whole construct fades out during a long finish. The pepper leaves a bit earlier, the smoke stays a little longer.

The Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr is a delicious Islay Whisky that matured in first-fill ex-bourbon cask, which are constructed of American oak, and brought to perfection in cask that were made of European oak. The combination of casks is playing a very important role in the production of Premium Whiskys like the Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr.

Nevertheless, its smoky flavours have been built long before the maturation starts. It is the process of kiln-drying the green malt that adds the smokiness. Therefor the distillery uses a peat fire to heat the kiln. Depending on what combustible material is used, the later character of the spirit can vary.

Laphroaig is the southernmost distillery on the Isle of Islay. It has its warehouse directly on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. That could be the reason for the salty note which is part of many Laphroaig Whiskies. The closeness to the sea might be also the reason for the name An Cuan Mòr. It is Gaelic and means as much as “Big Ocean”.
