The Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine is a single malt Scotch from Islay that finished in ex-red wine casks

Details: Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine Islay

  • Islay Whisky
  • Single Malt
  • Whisky aus Schottland

An expression that comes from the northernmost distillery on the Isle of Islay, the Bunnahabhain Distillery. But the Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine cannot be seen as a typical Islay whisky.

Usually the malts from that island have a quite strong smoke aroma. Not so this dram. On the nose the flavoursome smell of dark fruits, vanilla and butterscotch mix perfectly with aromas of hazelnuts and a salty sea breeze.

On the palate this single malt is quite vigorous. The taste is constructed of fruity flavours like apricot, plum and cherry as well as of oak from the wine casks, some sea salt, a bit cocoa and just a slight hint of smoke.

The finish is lasting long and offers nuances of nuts, spices and a little smoke.

The Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine has a fantastic character that was created by using different kinds of casks. First of all, the spirit was filled in ex-bourbon cask, so that the seasoned wood of the American white oak shaped the young aromas.

Afterwards it matured in ex-red wine casks, which has been used in France and Italy. The red wine seasoned wood is quite uncommon for the whisky production but contributes perfectly well to this Islay single malt Scotch. The colour of this premium dram is natural and without additives.

It is a non chill-filtered whisky that is released in small batches every year. The limited amount is offered mainly in the travel retail.

The expression Eirigh Na Greine is Gaelic and means “Morning Sky”. For the case someone should ask for the name of this delicious whisky, it is pronounced Ae-ree ne gray-nyuh.

The Bunnahabhain Distillery is located north of Port Askaig, not far from the Caol Ila Distillery, on the Isle of Islay.

This island is not just part of the Inner Hebrides but is even called “The Queen of the Hebrides”.
