Who is connecting the Bowmore Distillery to sherry flavoured whiskies, might be a bit surprised by the Bowmore Small Batch. In contrast to other Bowmore products, this Single Malt Scotch aged solely in ex-bourbon casks.

On the nose this Islay whisky impresses with a fantastic balance between the smoky peat aroma and softer notes of vanilla, toffee and honey. Furthermore, the typical sea breeze can be smelled as well as a touch of cinnamon. The body is velvety, soft and oily. On the palate fruity notes mix with vanilla, oak and a hint of lime. And, that is understood, this dram comes with Bowmore’s classical salty sea breeze flavour. Towards the end it stays soft and oily but turns a bit dry. The finish offers gentle smoke, vanilla and a slight note of lime.

The elegant and smooth character of the Bowmore Small Batch was mainly influenced by the maturation period in different types of casks. It aged in first-fill and second-fill bourbon casks, which are made of American white oak. For Bowmore’s Master Distiller the quality was much more important than the quantity and thus it became a small batch.

The Bowmore Distillery was established in 1779 and is therefore the oldest distillery on the Isle of Islay. The production plant was built directly on the shore and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by Loch Indaal. This closeness to the sea might by the reason for the salty note that gives distinction to Bowmore’s whiskies.

The fresh and clear water, which is needed for the production of premium single malts, is coming from the Laggan River. Although today is it becoming more and more uncommon for distilleries to run their own malting floors, at Bowmore the old tradition is kept alive. At the oldest Islay distillery the traditional handcraft is of the highest value and is the key to ongoing high quality.
