The Tomintoul Distillery is located in Ballindalloch close to the village Tomintoul. It is the highest village in the Scottish Highlands and therefore the whisky company reaches a certain altitude as well.

In 2007, the Master Distiller Robert Fleming released the Tomintoul Peaty Tang single malt Scotch as a new smoky creation. Under his guidance the team manufactured a smooth dram with a heathery aroma, a very soft smokiness and a mix of citrus and floral nuances.

On the palate there is a smoky flavour that cannot really be compared with typical Islay whiskies. Even though the dram has a clear peaty note, it is carefully giving enough space to hints of oak, a malty nuttiness, a mellow sweetness and some far away fruits.

The finish is of medium length and offers a slight sweetness and more of the fine smoke.

Overall, the Tomintoul Peaty Tang is a fantastic single malt for whisky enthusiasts who like expressions with a smooth note of peat. It is not for nothing that the Tomintoul Distillery is famous for producing “the gentle dram”.

Furthermore, it could be a great whisky for those who search for an entry level smoky Scotch.

The Tomintoul “With a Peaty Tang” is a Speyside single malt of a somewhat unusual character. For its production the distillery uses peated malt barley, which is very uncommon in that region.

It is the result of kiln-drying the malted barley with a peat fire. However, the Tomintoul Distillery is producing just a limited quantity of smoky whiskies per year so that the malted barley is typically not dried over peat.

The Tomintoul Peaty Tang is fabricated just two times per year.

The Tomintoul Distillery was founded in 1964 and is therefore still a quite young company. Nevertheless, the founders were eager to implement traditional methods of whisky production.

For though the company was built in the 1960s, the history of illicit distillation is probably much older.
