The Monkey Shoulder is a very interesting blended malt Scotch produced in Dufftown by William Grant & Sons. The Monkey Shoulder blended malt Scotch contains Whiskies from three neighbouring distilleries – Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie.
This Speyside Whisky has a complex and well-balanced bouquet which starts slowly with the spicy oak from the casks, a touch of tobacco, a bit of cocoa, hints of leather and some sweetness. It then gives space to fruity aromas like marmalade and zesty orange as well as to vanilla and cloves.
The taste is mellow and reveals roasted barley, butterscotch, honey and nuances of dried apricot. After a few seconds it becomes drier and shows a smooth bitterness. The finish of The Monkey Shoulder blended malt Scotch has medium length with flavours of oak.
Monkey Shoulder seems to be a strange name for a Whisky. Many centuries ago, distilleries throughout Scotland employed maltmen, whose jobs it was to hand-turn barley using a wooden shovel known as a schiel in the distillery’s malthouse.
Turning the grain by hand with a big shovel is an arduous job and after working a long shift, the neck and shoulders became sore and the arms just hung down like a monkey’s.
The name Monkey Shoulder was chosen to honour the hard work of all the maltmen who devoted their full energy into this job and made this blended Monkey Shoulder malt Scotch Whisky what it is today.
The Monkey Shoulder Speyside Whisky contains three single malts from Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. All of these top class distilleries are run by William Grant & Sons.
The three Speyside Whiskies mature in the finest ex-bourbon casks before they get blended together. On the bottle it says Batch 27.
This does not mean, that it is the 27th batch of the Monkey Shoulder but that its different Whiskies have been taken from 27 different casks. This ensures its extraordinary smooth and rich taste.
The Monkey Shoulder blended Scotch is the perfect Whisky for sipping but is also ideal as an ingredient for a fancy cocktail. Try it as refreshing “Old Fashioned” with sugar syrup and Angostura Bitters or as warming “Hot Toddy” with honey, boiling water and a clove.
