The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is an improved version of the standard Laphroaig single malt Scotch. It became a bit more special because the finish of the maturation was spent in Quarter Casks.

In general this Islay whisky still incarnates the typical Laphroaig character, which is very smoky. Actually it is even said that Laphroaig’s products are the most richly flavoured Scottish whiskies and in this case flavour is referring to the notes of smoky peat. Precisely this smoke aroma seems very dominant on the nose of this Laphroaig Quarter Cask.

It is phenolic and brings the burnt ash bonfire to mind. Furthermore, a well-balanced mixture of oak, a slight sweetness, ripe banana and spices can be smelled.

The body appears rich, complex and powerful. On the palate the smoky peat is typically strong but the spicy oak constitutes a fantastic counterpart. A gentle sweetness and a slight saltiness make this dram complete.

The finish has medium length and is still showing spices while it is becoming a bit dryer.

The Laphroaig Quarter Cask was shaped during its maturation in two different kinds of casks. Firstly, the new make was filled in ex-bourbon casks, which consist of American white oak.

Afterwards the whisky is filled in Quarter Casks. This type is much smaller than usual barrels but consist of the same wood. They are built by reducing the number of staves of a normal cask by half and reassembling the remaining half. Thus, the Quarter Casks have a reduced volume.

That leads to a bigger contact surface between whisky and wood and therefore to a more intense exchange between those two components.

The Laphroaig Distillery is operating since 1815. It was established by the brothers Donald and Alex Johnston not far from the small village Port Ellen. It is the southernmost distillery on the Isle of Islay.

The Laphroaig Quarter Cask has won many medals over the years. To give a short impression we state just a few awards from recent years.
