Knockando 15 Years Speyside Single Malt 0,7 l

In 2010 this Knockando 15 Year Old was added to the product family at the Knockando Distillery. The company carries the same name as the town where it is to be found and which is located just a few hundred meters north of the River Spey.

The water, which is used for the whisky production, stems from the Cardnach Burn. It is the basement for this great single malt Scotch that has a bouquet, which reminds of nutmeg, cocoa, chocolate, cinnamon and a fresh fruitiness of apples as well as pears.

Additionally, a little sweetness from the sherry casks becomes noticeable. On the palate fruits play the leading part. Especially raisins effuse a pleasant sweetness but leave enough space to the flavours of apples, pears and a hint of almonds. To the end the flavours of mild spices constitute the medium long finish.

The Knockando 15 Year Old is a great Speyside whisky that had the chance to mature in different kinds of casks. On one hand it was filled in sherry casks, which are made of European Oak and give a fruity flavour and a dark colour.

On the other hand this malt matured in refill bourbon casks, which are made of American White Oak and are mainly responsible for a mellow sweetness and notes of oak.

The name Knockando derives from the Gaelic “Cnoc-an-dhu” and means little black hill. The distillery was established by John Thompson in 1898. Today it is run by the company Diageo.

Special about the Knockando Distillery is that each season is bottled for itself, so that whiskies of different age are not mixed. Furthermore, the company is not adding any colourants to their malts.

Because of those two factors it could happen, that slight differences among whiskies of different release years could be detected. 

Among other things, the Knockando Distillery became quite famous because of the admission to the Classic Malts Selection in 2005.

It was the Knockando 12 Year Old that was elected to be part of this collection of excellent whiskies.
