Isle of Jura Diurachs' Own 16 Years 1 l

The Diurachs’ Own, as this single malt Scotch is called, is a 16 years old dram made by the Jura Distillery. This distillery is located on the Isle of Jura, which is part of the Inner Hebrides in the south-west of Scotland

Its closeness to the ocean leaves a mark, as the smell has notes of salty seawater and sea weed. Furthermore, it shows aromas of nuts, herbs, spices, dark chocolate and hints of orange.

On the palate the Jura 16 Year Old impresses with an extensive and complex character. Even though the alcohol strength is quite low, the body is powerful. It has a gingery spiciness, which is not burning but rather aromatic.

In addition, cloves, nuts, dark chocolate, some sweet honey and caramel as well as oranges lead to a mouth-watering sensation. The finish is lasting long. While the spiciness ebbs away, the sweetness is getting through. Hints of oak and a little dryness swing by as well.

The Jura 16 Year Old Diurachs’ Own matured in two different kinds of casks. Firstly the spirit spent 14 years in ex-bourbon casks, which are made of American white oak. Secondly it finished for two years in ex-Amoroso Oloroso sherry casks. Especially the sherry casks are having a strong impact on the aromas as well as on the colour.

The Jura Distillery is the only whisky producing company on the island Jura. Its history can be traced back to the early 19th century but the facilities, as they are known today, were built in the 1960s.

Just little over ten Diurachs, as the inhabitants of the Isle of Jura are called in Gaelic, work at the distillery. It is said that the Jura 16 Year Old is the favourite whisky among the locals.

Thus, it is named Diurachs’ Own and shows the Diurachs symbol on each bottle as a sign of approval of Jura’s residents.
