Details: Highland Park Drakkar

  • Highland Park
  • Single Malt
  • Scotch Whisky

The Highland Park Drakkar is a special bottling that was originally produced for the travel value. It was distilled and matured in Kirkwall on the biggest of the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland. The Highland Park Drakkar has an impressively dark hue, which was reached without any colourants.

On the nose this single malt shows a fragrant complexity that is absolutely full and rich. The composition of fine bonfire smoke, sweet vanilla, dried fruits, peach, cherries, slightly sourly oranges and notes of sherry is forming a fantastic balance. On the palate cherries and oranges are the dominating fruit flavours. Smoky peat and notes of oak make this dram a real pleasure. The finish is still full and well balanced while it lasts long. Impressions of sweet sherry, light smoke and oak are what is left from this fantastic dram.

Maturing most of the time in ex-sherry casks is what made the Highland Park Drakkar so full and complex and gave it such a deep amber colour. As most of Highland Park’s whiskies are connected to the time when Vikings were ruling land and sea, this expression is also reminding of the Nordic folk.

Drakkar is the name for a long ship that was used by the Vikings for travel. Because of their shape, those boats were also called dragon ships. Therefore, the label of the Highland Park Drakkar is showing the characteristical head of a dragon.

The Highland Park Distillery is the northernmost distillery of Scotland. In 1798 Magnus Eunson built facilities to bootleg whisky and in 1825 Robert Borwick used this ground to establish a licensed distillery. Ever since just a few minor changes and enlargements have been fulfilled.

Especially the old traditions of whisky production have not changed so that every drop of Highland Park single malts contain about 200 years of history and experience.
