From a small village called Rothes comes this relatively light single malt Scotch. The Glenrothes Alba Reserve has various characteristics that make this Speyside whisky so very special.
First of all there is this beautiful, golden hue, which was achieved without any artificial colouring. Furthermore, the bulgy bottle is a nice eye-catcher and stands out from every whisky collection.
But most important are the flavours and aromas. On the nose the malt enraptures with notes of fresh coconut, American oak, some menthol, vanilla and a floral hint. The body is smooth, thick and oily.
On the palate fruits and berries combine with a very soft oak flavour and the sweetness from caramel. To the end the dram stays sweet and smooth with a medium long finish.
An interesting fact is that the Glenrothes Alba Reserve is one of just a few kosher single malts on the market. The Kahrut Division of the London Beth Din did even certify this fact.
The difference to other non-kosher malts lies in the process of maturation. While other whiskies are ripening in bourbon- as well as in sherry casks, the Glenrothes Alba Reserve is maturing solely in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. It is said that the sherry casks would impurify the spirit and makes it therefore non-kosher.
The way this product matured is not just a kosher solution but also the reason for its soft and sweet character.
The name Alba Reserve derives on one hand from Quercus Alba, which the Latin name for the American White Oak, and on the other hand from Alba, which is the Gaelic word for Scotland. This title was chosen because this dram comes from Scotland where it was maturing in casks made of American White Oak.
Since 1879 the Glenrothes Distillery is producing whiskies for well-known blends like The Famous Grouse or Cutty Sark and of course its own single malts. It is doing so with great success as the great quantity of won awards is proofing. The Glenrothes Alba Reserve has also received a few medals:
