The Glengoyne Distillery is producing a beautiful range of differently aged Highland single malts. Robbie Hughes, the Distillery Manager, creates whiskies that matured for 10, 12, 15, 18, 21 and even 25 years.

The Glengoyne 18 Year Old is an elegant Scotch with a natural golden colour. Its aroma seems complex and well-balanced. It shows notes of vanilla, caramel, ripe melon, red apple, apricot and brown sugar.

The body appears round, full and complex. At first, it offers a relatively strong spiciness from the oak casks, which mixes with butterscotch and hints of fruits. Nuances of nuts turn into marzipan and the flavour of Seville orange marmalade bring a slight bitterness. The finish is long and warm and some orange peel bitterness lingers on.

The Glengoyne 18 Year Old was launched in 2012 but that does not mean that it is a newcomer. Actually it developed from the Glengoyne 17 Year Old, which was replaced by the one year older single malt.

As with every whisky, the Glengoyne Distillery is having a close look on the 18 years old’s quality. Thus, the company chose the cask for the long maturation very well.

In order to receive the greatest character, the barrels were combined of 15 % first fill American oak sherry, 35 % first fill European oak sherry and 50 % ex-bourbon casks.

In 1833 the history of Glengoyne started in an area full of illicit stills. George Connell built the distillery in a village called Dumgoyne and named it Burnfoot Distillery. In the early 20th century the name was changed to Glengoyne. This comes from the Gaelic “Glen Guin” and means “Glen of the wild geese”. The company and its employees are much more settled than the wild geese.

The production is focused on high quality and not large quantity. Therefore, it is not surprising that Glengoyne runs the slowest stills in Scotland.
