The Snow Grouse is a blended grain whisky from Scotland and had its début in 2008. It belongs to the species of the Famous Grouse, which is one of the most popular blended malt whiskies of the world. There are two ways to enjoy the Snow Grouse. On one hand it can be served at room temperature and at the other hand it can be drunk cooled down straight from the freezer. The latter option is recommended by its creator. On room temperature the smell has sweet aromas of honey, vanilla and peach as well as a hint of ginger. It is light and soft. The taste has notes of grain biscuits and a mellow fruitiness. Especially the vanilla flavour, which is close to vanilla fudge, is a pleasant smooth component. The elegant sweetness reminds of the sublime taste of the Famous Grouse. The finish is quite short and leaves a sweet breeze. Enjoying the Snow Grouse cooled down it becomes even lighter and the vanilla leaves a stronger impression.
The Snow Grouse is a blended grain Scotch, which means that a selection of the best grain whiskies is mingled. Grain whiskies tend to have a lighter body than malt whiskies and their aromas are usually much smoother and softer. Some say that the Snow Grouse is not just for whisky fancier but also for connoisseurs who usually prefer a delicate iced vodka.
The brand The Famous Grouse has its roots back in the 19th century, when Matthew Gloag blended a Scotch that was named The Grouse Brand. Starting from the small city Perth in Scotland, his blended whisky quickly became popular and thus was renamed as The Famous Grouse. Nowadays the brand is owned by the Edrington Group and produces its spirits at the Glenturret Distillery in Crieff in the Scottish Highlands.
