The Buffalo Trace is the staple of the Buffalo Trace Distillery, which is located in Frankfort, Kentucky, and has a huge and diverse product range.

Although the company is even producing vodka, the core business is the creation of great bourbon whiskeys. And in that section the Buffalo Trace Kentucky straight bourbon Whiskey is an excellent piece of work.

On the nose the flavoursome dram has a mild and sweet aroma of caramel, toffee, some vanilla, hints of cinnamon, spicy oak and nuances of leather. The taste has a similarly pleasant sweetness and is smooth and mellow. It reveals soft flavours of toffee, brown sugar, oak and espresso beans. After a short while, it turns slightly dry. The finish has a good length and shows a mellow sweetness combined with cinnamon and oak. Overall the Buffalo Trace is less a wild buffalo but more of a tame character.

The Buffalo Trace Distillery is located at the banks of the Kentucky River. Its water was naturally filtered by limestone and constitutes therefore a perfect basis for a great bourbon. The processed maize comes from local Kentucky and Indiana farms and together with malted barley, rye and wheat it builds another important part of the fine whiskey. Finally, the maturation in casks made of American oak is forming the character as well.

The oldest warehouse at the Buffalo Trace Distillery is permanently in use since 1881. Due to different kinds of warehouses, the company is able to apply different ageing styles. The size of the buildings vary and some are made of bricks others of wood. Thus, the barrels face different climates and develop each with an own character.

The distillery chose its name Buffalo Trace to look back on the paths that were laid by herds of bison and used by travellers, hunters and merchants to enter isolated and remote areas. One of those traces led to the ground where the distillery was built in the 19th century.
