Lowlands

Details: Auchentoshan Springwood

  • Springwood
  • Single Malt Whisky
  • Lowland Scotch
  • Dreifach destilliert

The Auchentoshan Springwood is a gentle Lowland whisky with a smooth character compared to other Auchentoshan whiskies.

This single malt Scotch has a light, flavoursome smell of citrus fruits, orange peels and scents of vanilla-like honey. The lively, zesty taste is warming and tends towards a pleasant dryness. It consist of pink grapefruit, subliminal nutty aromas, hints of vanilla and a faint chocolate flavour.

The pink grapefruit adds some sourness that goes along very well with the dryness. The finish seems fresh and pure with ongoing nuances of citrus fruits. Additionally the American oak appends piquant, nutty attributes to the soft charisma of the Scotch.

Characteristic of the American oak is that it adds its typical flavours without having strong bitter impacts. Like Mother Nature during spring-time, the woody aroma of the Springwood is arising shy and diffident.

The Auchentoshan Springwood has spent its maturing process solely in ex-bourbon casks. The process was split into two steps. During the first step, the single malt was filled in hogsheads.

For the second step, the whisky changes to standard barrels. The only difference of these two kinds of casks is the size.

A standard barrel is left as it is made for the bourbon production, whereas the hogshead has an enlarged volume. To reach the higher volume, a standard barrel is rebuild with more staves.

Depending on the size of a cask, the spirit has more or less contact with the wood. Thus, a distillery is able to control the development of tastes, smells and even the appearance.

Known as the last company in the Lowlands that distils its whisky three times, the Auchentoshan Distillery is actually using the triple distillation method for each of their products.

This method is making the whisky softer and lighter before it is maturing in casks. Filled into an elegant bottle, which has a fashionable relief of the distillery logo, this nice daily dram is even good to look at.
