The Aberlour 18 Year Old Highland whisky is a typical single malt Scotch from its region. Whiskies from this area are known to be lighter and sweeter than others. That applies to a certain extent to this Aberlour.
Its smell has notes of toffee, butterscotch and dark chocolate and is combined with ripe peaches as well as oranges. The chocolate and the orange appear slightly bitter.
The rich taste comes up with notes of apricot and cream. It is balanced by the flavour of oak, old leather, dark chocolate and a hint of honey. This whisky finishes with a soft sweetness that turns into an aromatic oak flourish.
Even though Speyside whiskies tend to be sweeter, this single malt Scotch impresses with a pleasant bitterness which is a result of the long maturing.
Furthermore, the double-cask method is important for the distinctive savour. In the first step the whiskey is stored in ex-Bourbon casks from traditional bourbon distilleries in the USA. In the second step it is filled in ex-Oloroso Sherry butts from the Jerez region in Spain.
The casks are well selected to ensure the unchanging high quality. The choice of the right casks is very important for the peculiarity of the taste and is therefore the basis for a premium whisky.
The Aberlour Distillery, which is named after the village Charlestown of Aberlour, was founded by James Fleming in 1879. Fleming had the vision to produce the finest single malt in the whole Highland region.
As a basis for his premium whiskies he used the water of a little creek that joins the Spey at Aberlour. Its name is Lour and a myth says that its water has some magic and healing power. Combined with the best Scottish barley, it constitutes the principle of a delicious Scotch whisky.
In 2013 and 2014 the Aberlour 18 Year Old showed its premium quality in different competitions:
