The Aberfeldy Distillery turned the fresh water of the Pitilie Burn into an excellent single malt Scotch during a period of 18 years. This Aberfeldy 18 Year Old is a sublime Highland whisky that has a bright golden hue. The nose is ensnared by sweet aromas of dry fruits, sherry and orange as well as hints of smoke, cinnamon and a gently bitter note. The body is mild and soft. On the palate the honey is a strong component, which is accompanied by a fruitiness, an oiliness, sherry flavours, a little oak and nutmeg. To the end the spicy aroma of smoke is becoming more noticeable but still not too heavy. The finish is quite long and creamy sweet.
Primarily, the Aberfeldy 18 Year Old was intended for the travel value but is available in regular stores now as well. The whisky comes in a nice, bulgy bottle that stands out from the conventional ones. The bottle is packed in a classy, cylindrical, black box, which has an elegant golden printing and is as qualitative as its content.
The Aberfeldy Distillery was founded by the brothers John and Tommy Dewar in 1896 and opened two years later in 1898. It is located in the outskirts of the small town Aberfeldy in the Highland Perthshire. For many years the distillery was mainly producing the lead malts for the Dewar whiskies but in the recent past the company started to focus on its own products. Especially the Aberfeldy 12 Year Old and the Aberfeldy 21 Year Old constitute, together with this Aberfeldy 18 Year Old, the core range. Overall Aberfeldy has already won 24 gold medals with all their whiskies and this is probably not the end. The 18 year old Scotch was launched in 2014 and is a promising candidate for further victories.
