The Famous Grouse Distillery
In contrast to the small bird of its logo, the brand that is renowned for its sublime blended malt Scotch whiskies conquered almost the whole world.
The Famous Grouse is a brand that has been established by Matthew Gloag in the 19th century. His grandfather was a wine merchant in Perth, Scotland, who started the business and handed it over to his son William in 1860. William already showed interest in producing blended whiskies and in 1896 his nephew Matthew took over the business.
Matthew created a blend that was called The Grouse Brand and with it he started a long story of success. Because his blended whisky became very well-known, he renamed it as The Famous Grouse a few years later. The Gloag family kept the company until 1970. It was sold to Highland Distillers, which was purchased by the Edrington Group in 1999. Ever since the Famous Grouse is part of the Edrington Group, which owns for example The Macallan and Highland Park as well.© timberbush-tours.co.uk | The Glenturret destillery

The red grouse as trademark of the perfect blend
© thefamousgrouse.com | The GrouseTo make sure that every single drop of the Famous Grouse blend has the same quality, the company has a great team of experienced blenders, craftsmen, merchants, maltsters and so on. The relations to the single malt producing distilleries already exist for many years and the four blenders do a fabulous job by combining the right whiskies in order to get a perfect blend. Furthermore, the team gathered around Master Blender Gordon Motion is nosing a few hundred whiskies per day just to find potential new creations for the Famous Grouse family.
The red grouse became the trademark of this whisky brand because it is Scotland s national game bird and thus shows the bond between the Famous Grouse and its home Scotland. The shy animal is medium-sized and has its wildlife habitat in the heather moorland around Great Britain and especially in Scotland. Depending on the whisky blend, the logo is changed to a black grouse or a ptarmigan.
